Kenya's Thwake Multipurpose Dam, a massive infrastructure project co-built by China Gezhouba Group, is nearing completion – and officials say it could change the lives of millions. 💧 The dam, nicknamed a 'game changer' by Water Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Njeru, promises to tackle water scarcity, boost agriculture, and power homes in Kenya's drought-prone southeast.
More Than Just a Dam 🌾
Here's what’s at stake for the 1.3 million residents set to benefit:
- 🔌 20 MW of clean hydropower – fueling Kenya's energy transition
- 🚰 150,000 cubic meters of daily clean water – ending long treks for families
- 🌱 Irrigation for 100,000 acres – turning arid land into food baskets
From Vision to Reality 🏗️
Part of Kenya’s Vision 2030 development blueprint, the dam is a collaboration between the Kenyan government, African Development Bank, and Chinese engineering expertise. Njeru called it a 'testament to Kenya-China cooperation,' aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative’s focus on sustainable infrastructure.
Construction began in 2018, with Phase 1 (embankment) now complete. Next up: bridge-building, gate installations, and power plant setup. Once finished, the dam could become a blueprint for other African nations battling climate challenges.
