In Egypt’s sun-drenched Aswan desert, a collaboration between Chinese engineers and local workers is transforming sand dunes into a sea of solar panels at the Benban Solar Energy Park. With temperatures soaring, the teams are racing to build what could become North Africa’s clean energy crown jewel .
Spanning 37 sq km (that’s 5,000 football fields!), this mega-project aims to generate 2 gigawatts of power – enough to light up over 1 million homes. Chinese company CTG Asia-Africa is leading the charge with five solar farms producing 321 megawatts, making them the park’s second-largest investor.
Why it matters: The project cuts Egypt’s CO2 emissions by 2 million tonnes yearly – like taking 430,000 gas-guzzling cars off the road. But it’s not just about clean energy:
Created thousands of local jobs during construction
Boosted incomes for families in nearby Benban
Attracted skilled workers like engineer Ahmed Kamal, who relocated his family for the opportunity
'This job changed my life,' says Mohammed Hussein, 39, who previously traveled across Egypt for work. 'Now I’m home, earning better – and we’re literally powering our future.'
The tech edge: All solar panels are Chinese-made, combining cutting-edge tech with Egypt’s 3,000+ annual sunshine hours. As Egypt aims to get 42% of its energy from renewables by 2035, partnerships like this could light the way .
