China is making waves in the world of sustainability! According to the latest report from the China National Intellectual Property Administration, the country has secured the top spot in green and low-carbon patent applications for 2023, boasting over 50% of the global total.
This impressive growth is part of China’s strong push towards sustainable development, featuring a 20% year-on-year increase in patent applications. That's a whopping 7.1 percentage points above the global average!
But what exactly are these green and low-carbon patents? They focus on technologies that drive green development, spanning five key areas: carbon reduction from fossil fuels, energy saving and recycling, clean energy, energy storage, and greenhouse gas capture and utilization.
China has particularly excelled in the energy storage sector, filing 37,000 patent applications in 2023 alone, which accounts for nearly half of the world’s total. When it comes to clean energy, China leads the charge with the highest number of invention patents for both solar and hydrogen energy, reaching 8,000 and 5,000 respectively.
Additionally, through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, China has surpassed 5,000 applications this year, maintaining its position as the global leader for the third year in a row.
Since 2019, China has been the world’s leading filer of patent applications, solidifying its role as a powerhouse in innovation and sustainability. As the world moves towards a greener future, China’s contributions are paving the way for impactful and lasting change.
