Shenzhen has become a powerhouse for cross-continental trade, with 96 China-Europe freight trains roaring out of the city in the first half of 2024. These trains carried goods worth 2.74 billion yuan ($384.2 million)—a 34.2% jump compared to last year—showcasing the city’s growing role in global logistics.
Stability Over Storms & Skies
Why trains? Shenzhen Customs official Xu Zhenkang explains: ‘Unlike ships or planes, rail is less affected by weather and offers reliable timing.’ Perfect for tech gadgets, robots, and machinery—all key exports from Shenzhen’s buzzing factories.
From Shenzhen to Europe… and Beyond
The trains chugged through Russia, Belarus, Poland, and Germany, delivering over 100 types of goods, from electronics to trendy apparel. Local businesses are thriving, with products from the Pearl River Delta (like Foshan and Zhongshan) flocking to Shenzhen for their European debut.
Greater Bay Area’s New ‘Silk Road’
These trains are now a vital bridge between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Europe. A new Shenzhen-Budapest route launched this year is helping companies tap fresh markets.
Meanwhile, Shenzhen’s total imports/exports hit a record 2.2 trillion yuan in H1, up 31.7% year-on-year. That’s 10.4% of China’s total trade—proving this tech hub isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
