In a historic move, SpaceX launched its first all-civilian crew on Tuesday, marking the company's fifth and riskiest private mission to date. The Polaris Dawn mission aims to test new spacesuit designs and conduct the first-ever private spacewalk.
The mission kicked off early morning from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:23 a.m. Eastern Time. The crew, consisting of billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, retired military fighter pilot Scott Poteet, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, soared into orbit in a modified Crew Dragon capsule.
After reaching orbit in just nine and a half minutes, the crew enjoyed zero gravity, even playing with a plush astronaut toy dog as they marveled at the breathtaking view of Earth from space. SpaceX Launch Director Frank Messina conveyed his support and encouragement, inspiring the crew as they embarked on their mission.
The Polaris Dawn mission is set to explore an oval-shaped orbit, bringing the spacecraft as close as 190 kilometers to Earth and stretching out to 1,400 kilometers—the furthest humans have ventured since the Apollo moon program in 1972.
One of the mission's highlights is the planned spacewalk on the third day, where Isaacman and Gillis will exit the capsule tethered by an oxygen line, testing SpaceX's latest spacesuit technology. This spacewalk will rely on a slimmed-down, custom-built spacesuit, as the Crew Dragon lacks an airlock like the ISS.
Jared Isaacman, the mission's financier, has previously spearheaded private spaceflights with SpaceX, including the Inspiration4 mission in 2021. The Polaris Dawn mission is the first of three trips he has secured, with plans for future flights on SpaceX's ambitious Starship rocket.
Beyond the excitement, the mission serves as a crucial test for scientific experiments aimed at understanding how cosmic radiation and the vacuum of space impact the human body. These findings will build on decades of research conducted on the International Space Station.
Since NASA's reliance on SpaceX's Crew Dragon began post the Space Shuttle retirement in 2011, the company has successfully launched nine astronaut missions to the ISS, solidifying its role as a key player in space exploration.
As SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of private spaceflight, the Polaris Dawn mission stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the adventurous spirit that drives us to explore the final frontier.
