The World Bank has unveiled a groundbreaking report in Nairobi, highlighting off-grid solar solutions as the most effective way to bridge the global electricity gap.
According to the 2024 Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report, nearly 400 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity. Off-grid solar remains the most economical method to power these communities, offering a sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional energy sources.
\"The sector already provided 55 percent of the new connections in sub-Saharan Africa between 2020 and 2022, where over 80 percent of the unelectrified population lives,\" the report states. Published by the World Bank's Energy Sector Management Assistance Program and GOGLA, a global off-grid solar association, this report underscores the vital role of solar energy in transforming lives.
The findings were shared during the Global Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo 2024 in Nairobi, attracting over 1,500 delegates, including government officials and industry leaders. The three-day event focused on the future of energy access and the pivotal role of renewable energy in achieving global development goals.
Despite significant progress, the report reveals that approximately 685 million people still lack access to electricity. However, as of the end of 2023, more than 560 million individuals rely on grid solar solutions for their households and businesses.
Fan Qimiao, World Bank country director for Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, and Uganda, emphasized the importance of affordable, clean electricity in lifting people out of poverty and fostering sustainable development. \"Off-grid solar will play a critical role in reaching households and accelerating electricity access for businesses, schools, and health centers,\" Fan noted.
Sarah Malm, executive director at GOGLA, praised the resilience of the off-grid solar industry amidst challenging economic conditions. She highlighted the need for $21 billion to create a financially sustainable off-grid solar sector capable of serving the hardest-to-reach populations and achieving energy access and climate goals.
With continued investment and innovation, off-grid solar stands as a beacon of hope for a brighter, more electrified future.
