Virgin Atlantic’s ‘Sustainable’ Flight Faces Backlash Over Scalability
Virgin Atlantic’s historic transatlantic flight powered entirely by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has drawn sharp criticism from environmental experts, who label it a ‘publicity stunt’ that fails to address aviation’s climate challenges.
The flight, which carried a small group including billionaire founder Richard Branson and UK Transport Minister Mark Harper, used 100% SAF made from waste products. But critics argue such fuels are not a scalable solution.
‘It’s a gimmick rather than a game changer,’ said Cait Hewitt of the Aviation Environment Federation. ‘99.9% of aviation fuel is still kerosene. This flight isn’t changing that.’
While Virgin called the journey a proof of concept, experts warn SAF production remains limited and energy-intensive. ‘We need honesty in this debate,’ Hewitt added. ‘Aviation’s future requires systemic change, not one-off experiments.’
