Quanzhou, the heart of China’s string puppetry, recently wrapped up the exhilarating 7th China Quanzhou International Puppet Festival in Fujian Province. Over four days, the city buzzed with creativity and artistry as more than 80 spectacular shows took center stage, featuring 35 talented puppetry troupes from 12 countries, including Spain, Russia, Italy, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
The festival, held in the hometown of Chinese string puppetry, was a vibrant celebration of this traditional art form. Visitors were mesmerized by the intricate performances, showcasing the high-level skills of Quanzhou’s puppeteers. Both performers and audiences left with awe and admiration for the timeless craft.
String puppetry is a cherished form of traditional theater in China, with its roots tracing back to the Han Dynasty (202–220 B.C.) in Quanzhou. Over thousands of years, this art has been lovingly preserved and developed, resulting in more than 700 traditional plays that reflect the rich folk beliefs and customs of the region, including ceremonies for marriages and funerals.
The International Puppet Festival not only highlighted the deep cultural heritage of Quanzhou but also fostered cultural exchange and understanding among artists and spectators from around the globe.
