The skies above Weifang – China’s historic kite capital – transformed into a living canvas this week as 465 participants from 46 countries and regions launched 509 dazzling kites at the 20th World Kite Championship. 🎏 From dragon-shaped giants stretching 30 meters to LED-lit night flyers, creativity soared alongside competitors in Shandong Province.
\"It’s like the Olympics of kite culture!\" said Marco Rossi, an Italian designer whose team brought a Venetian carnival-inspired creation. The event mixed fierce competition with cultural exchange, drawing families and digital nomads alike to watch acrobatic team performances and DIY kite workshops.
Weifang, birthplace of the ancient philosopher Confucius, has hosted kite festivals since 1984. This year’s lineup included eco-friendly bamboo kites and drone-assisted mega designs. Organizers noted it’s the first championship since 2019 to feature teams from all five continents, reflecting post-pandemic global reconnection.
