A Chinese doctor’s selfless act of bravery has united global hearts. Over 300 people gathered at Tanzania’s Muhimbili National Hospital this week to honor Dr. Zhang Junqiao, leader of China’s 27th medical aid mission to Tanzania, who died while rescuing a drowning woman on June 15. 🕊️

The 38-year-old anesthesiologist from Shandong province had been working at the hospital since early 2024, earning praise for his tireless efforts amid severe staff shortages. Colleagues described him as a 'beacon of hope' for patients and medical teams alike.

During the emotional tribute, Tanzanian health officials highlighted Dr. Zhang’s legacy: 'He gave his life to save another – this is the spirit of humanity we celebrate.' The incident occurred during a rare day off, when he jumped into rough waters to assist a struggling swimmer.

China’s medical missions to Tanzania, ongoing since 1968, have treated over 8 million patients. Dr. Zhang’s story has since gone viral on social media, with netizens calling him a 'real-life superhero' 🦸♂️. His family will receive posthumous honors from both Chinese and Tanzanian authorities.
