South Korea's major liberal opposition, the Democratic Party, alongside five minor parties, has submitted a second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol. This move comes after the first attempt was shelved last Saturday due to a boycott by the ruling People Power Party (PPP) lawmakers.
The opposition is gearing up to present the motion to a plenary session of the National Assembly on Friday, aiming for a vote on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
Under South Korea's constitution, at least two-thirds of the 300 National Assembly members must vote in favor to pass an impeachment. If successful, the constitutional court will review the case for up to 180 days, during which President Yoon's powers would be suspended.
President Yoon declared martial law on the night of December 3rd, citing the need to protect against what he termed a \"legislative dictatorship\" by the opposition majority. However, the National Assembly revoked this declaration just hours later.
In a recent televised address, Yoon defended his actions, insisting that his martial law imposition was legal and not an attempt to dismantle the constitution. \"I will fight to the end,\" he declared, emphasizing his commitment to his presidency despite widespread calls for resignation.
However, the second impeachment vote faces challenges, especially as Han Dong-hoon, the leader of Yoon's own PPP, has urged party members to support the impeachment on Saturday. This internal push adds uncertainty to the motion's outcome.
