In a major shakeup, Syria has suspended its constitution and parliament for three months following the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad. 🏛️⚖️
The move was reported by AFP news agency and Sawt al-Asima, a news outlet supportive of the militant groups that toppled Assad's government. While Sawt al-Asima hasn't detailed how the suspension will be implemented, AFP has shared that a new judicial and human rights committee will be set up to examine and potentially amend the constitution, according to interim government spokesperson Obaida Arnaout.
The country is navigating a significant transition after military forces recently formed a new transitional government over the weekend. Mohammed al-Bashir, previously leading a small region in northwestern Syria, has been appointed as the head of this transitional government, which is expected to oversee Syria until March 2025.
Meanwhile, Assad and his family have relocated to Moscow, where they've been granted asylum on \"humanitarian considerations.\" The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad has left Syria, resigned as president, and is advocating for a peaceful transfer of power. 🤝
