The Syrian constitution and parliament have been suspended for three months following the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, reports AFP news agency and Sawt al-Asima, a news outlet supportive of the militant groups that overthrew the Assad government.
Sawt al-Asima did not provide details on how the suspension will be implemented. Meanwhile, AFP reported that \"a judicial and human rights committee will be established to examine the constitution and then introduce amendments,\" citing interim government spokesperson Obaida Arnaout.
Syria is undergoing a major transition as the military forces that recently overthrew Assad have formed a new transitional government expected to oversee the country until March 2025. Mohammed al-Bashir, a relatively unknown figure who previously led a small region in northwestern Syria, has been appointed as the head of the transitional government.
Meanwhile, Assad and his family are in Moscow and have been granted asylum \"out of humanitarian considerations.\" The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad has left Syria and resigned as the country's president, calling for a peaceful transfer of power.
