A devastating collision between a truck and a minibus claimed 14 lives in western Kenya early Friday, highlighting ongoing road safety concerns in the region.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m. local time on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, a major transport route. Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri confirmed nine men, four women, and one child were killed. All 12 people in the minibus died instantly, while two occupants of the truck also lost their lives.
What happened?
Preliminary investigations suggest the truck driver lost control, crashing into the minibus and dragging it several meters. 'The impact trapped passengers immediately,' Muchiri stated, adding that emergency crews faced challenges reaching the crumpled vehicles.
This tragedy reignites discussions about road safety measures in Kenya, where overloaded vehicles and risky driving remain persistent issues. Authorities are urging stricter enforcement of traffic laws as night-time accidents spike during holiday seasons.
