🇺🇸🚨 Okinawa Protests Surge Against U.S. Military Sexual Assault Cases

Protests erupted in Okinawa and Tokyo this week as anger over sexual violence by U.S. military personnel reaches a boiling point 🗣️✊. Residents held silent vigils and rallies, demanding accountability after two U.S. Marines in their 20s were recently referred to prosecutors for alleged assaults – the latest in a string of cases since June 2023.

🚨 "Not again?" shouted one protester, Megumi Kamiya, echoing widespread frustration. Critics slammed newly launched U.S.-Japan security patrols as "just performance," with participants spotted "laughing and chatting" instead of addressing the crisis.

📌 Okinawa – home to 70% of U.S. bases in Japan but only 0.6% of its land – has long protested military-related crimes. Protesters in Tokyo joined the outcry, holding signs like "Listen to Okinawa" as organizer Masayuki Oku questioned: "How can we call this security when victims keep increasing?"

🌐 Tensions highlight the complex legacy of U.S.-Japan alliances. With three service members already indicted this year, locals demand systemic change – not patrols that feel like a "TV drama re-run."
