Gaza’s Farmland Crisis: UN Warns of Famine Risk 🌾💔

Gaza’s ability to grow food is collapsing, with less than 5% of its cropland now usable amid ongoing conflict, according to a new UN report. The findings reveal a dire humanitarian crisis, with over 80% of agricultural infrastructure damaged and famine risks soaring. 🌍🚨

Key Findings from the Report

The UN’s geospatial assessment shows only 688 hectares of Gaza’s farmland remain viable for cultivation – down from pre-conflict levels that supported over 560,000 livelihoods. Northern Gaza and Rafah have been hit hardest, with nearly all cropland inaccessible. 💔

Damage to greenhouses (71.2%) and agricultural wells (82.8%) has crippled food production. "This isn’t just infrastructure loss – it’s the collapse of Gaza’s lifelines," said FAO Deputy Director Beth Bechdol.

Economic and Human Toll

Before the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in October 2023, agriculture made up 10% of Gaza’s economy. Now, losses exceed $2 billion, with recovery costs estimated at $4.2 billion. Farmers, fishers, and families face unprecedented challenges as food scarcity worsens. 🛑

UN agencies stress urgent international action to prevent famine and rebuild Gaza’s shattered food systems. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding crisis.
