The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a dire warning: Gaza’s Al-Amal Hospital, one of the last functioning medical facilities in the region, is now "virtually out of service" due to intense military activity. 🚨 WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the situation "catastrophic," with access to the hospital blocked and preventable deaths rising daily.
"Two emergency teams are still trying to save lives with whatever supplies they have left," Tedros posted on X (formerly Twitter). Medical staff face shortages of essentials like anesthesia and antibiotics, leaving thousands of displaced families without care. 💔
Only One ICU Remains
With Al-Amal’s collapse, the nearby Nasser Medical Complex is now the sole hospital in Khan Younis with an intensive care unit. Both facilities have struggled since June to treat waves of wounded patients amid a two-month blockade, according to WHO reports.
While Israeli authorities recently allowed limited humanitarian aid into Gaza, Tedros stressed it’s nowhere near enough to address the crisis. Smoke was seen billowing near Nasser Hospital this week after nearby strikes, per eyewitness reports. 🌫️
