In a devastating aviation disaster, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff Thursday, killing at least 265 people. This marks the deadliest plane crash globally in over a decade.
The flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, plummeted during lunch hour, destroying part of the hostel. Only one survivor—Ramesh Viswashkumar, a British-Indian dual national—has been confirmed so far. “It all happened so quickly. When I got up, there were bodies all around me,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. His brother Ajay remains missing.
Authorities confirmed the death toll includes victims on the ground. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the passengers. DNA samples are being collected to identify remains, with victims’ families urged to assist.
