Thai-Cambodian Border Clashes Intensify Amid Stalled Ceasefire Efforts 🌍✌️

Fresh violence erupted along the Thai-Cambodian border this week, dashing hopes for peace as diplomatic efforts by ASEAN and the U.S. failed to halt artillery strikes and airstrikes. With over 303,000 civilians displaced and 11 reported deaths, the conflict is raising alarms across Southeast Asia.

Ceasefire Hopes Collapse

Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim proposed a ceasefire on December 13 as ASEAN chair, but Thailand’s army confirmed “no current arrangement” exists. Cambodian PM Hun Manet had initially backed the plan, but Thai forces reported new rocket attacks on a school zone in Sisaket Province hours later.

Civilian Toll Mounts

Cambodia claims Thai airstrikes destroyed a hotel and bridges in Pursat Province, while Thailand accuses Cambodian forces of targeting residential areas. Over 100,000 were displaced in similar clashes earlier this year – now numbers have tripled. Families are sheltering in makeshift camps, like one photographed in Banteay Meanchey province on December 13.

Global Diplomacy Stalls

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed both sides agreed to a truce during December 12 calls, but Thailand swiftly denied it. Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul vowed to continue military ops until threats cease, while ASEAN prepares emergency talks. The conflict marks a stark reversal from October’s joint peace pledge.

As smoke rises over border villages, the world watches whether ASEAN’s unity can withstand this test. One thing’s clear: civilians remain caught in the crossfire. 🔥
