Syrian Kurdish Leader in Damascus for Crucial Military Talks

Syrian Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi is back in Damascus this week for high-stakes talks about integrating his forces into Syria’s central military—a process that’s been stalled since a landmark 2025 agreement. 🕊️

The deal, signed last March with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, aimed to merge the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with the government by the end of 2025. But disagreements over decentralization and command structures have kept progress on hold. 🔄

Abdi, who leads the SDF, has pushed for regional autonomy—a red line for Damascus. Tensions flared in December when Syria proposed splitting Kurdish forces into smaller units, including an all-women brigade. While details remain under wraps, Abdi has called the negotiations "critical to stability" in the region. 💥

The SDF controls much of Syria’s oil-rich north, a strategic zone that’s drawn international attention. Türkiye, a key ally of Syria’s government, has urged full integration, citing security concerns along its border. 🌍

With U.S.-backed SDF forces still pivotal to counterterrorism efforts, the outcome of these talks could reshape Syria’s future—and the broader Middle East. Stay tuned. 📡
