Nigerian Troops Rescue 18 in Dramatic Maritime Pirate Standoff 🌊⚔️

Nigerian troops pulled off a high-stakes rescue mission this week, saving 18 passengers after suspected pirates hijacked their boat along the Calabar–Cameroon waterways. The daring operation, confirmed by the army on Monday, highlights ongoing security risks in West Africa’s coastal regions. 🚤💥

Armed attackers in two speedboats and a wooden vessel intercepted the commercial passenger boat near Kombo, a Cameroonian fishing port, according to the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade. A swift military response followed a distress call, forcing the pirates to flee into nearby creeks. All passengers were rescued unharmed—though adrenaline levels were likely through the roof! 🚨

Brigadier-General Patrick Alimikhena, commander of the 13 Brigade, praised troops for their "courage and professionalism" during the pursuit, which saw one pirate speedboat capsize after gunfire exchanges. 🔫🌊

Maritime kidnappings have surged in southern Nigeria, particularly along routes connecting Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Cameroon. In April 2025, pirates abducted 20 passengers near Akwa Ibom, followed by another 17 seized in September 2025. Authorities urge communities to share intel to curb these threats. 🛡️🤝
