Somalia Cuts Ties with UAE Over Sovereignty Concerns 🌍⚖️

In a dramatic move shaking up Horn of Africa politics, Somalia has terminated all agreements with the United Arab Emirates this week – canceling billion-dollar port deals and security partnerships. The decision, announced January 12, 2026, comes after months of rising tensions over Emirati activities in breakaway regions like Somaliland.

Why Now?

Somalia's Council of Ministers cited 'hostile actions threatening national sovereignty,' particularly criticizing UAE-backed infrastructure projects in Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo ports. This follows January's diplomatic firestorm when Yemeni separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi allegedly transited through Somaliland with UAE assistance – seen by Mogadishu as a red line 🚩.

Regional Ripples

The UAE's $47 billion East Africa investment footprint now faces uncertainty. Dubai's DP World, which operates Berbera port under a 30-year deal, declined to comment on the cancellation. Meanwhile, semi-autonomous regions Puntland and Jubaland – both UAE allies – might resist Mogadishu's decision, setting up potential constitutional clashes.

While the UAE recently pledged support for Somalia's territorial integrity, its strategic interests in Somaliland (unrecognized since 1991) appear increasingly at odds with federal authorities. Analysts call this breakup a 'geopolitical earthquake' affecting everything from counterterrorism efforts to Red Sea trade routes 🌊.
