Africa Declares End to Mpox Health Emergency 🎉

Continent Transitions to Long-Term Strategy After 18-Month Crisis

Africa CDC lifted its mpox public health emergency status this week, marking a major milestone in combating the disease that caused over 80,000 suspected cases in 2024. 🦠 Director General Jean Kaseya called it "a testament to Africa’s growing health leadership" during Thursday’s announcement.

The emergency declaration in August 2024 triggered a $1 billion response fund, enabling vaccine distribution to 16 countries and enhanced surveillance systems. 💉 While the Democratic Republic of Congo bore the brunt of cases (96%), coordinated efforts slashed infection rates by 60% and deaths by 77% by late 2025.

"This isn’t mission accomplished – it’s mission evolving," Kaseya emphasized. "We’re shifting from crisis mode to sustainable elimination strategies."

Health experts credit community-led vaccination drives and real-time data sharing through the Africa CDC’s emergency network. The agency’s new transition plan focuses on maintaining vaccine stockpiles and training local health workers – crucial steps as climate change increases zoonotic disease risks. 🌍
