Gaza City remains gripped by a severe water shortage despite Israel reopening a key supply line, the UN warned this week. While the Mekorot pipeline resumed operations, only 6,000 cubic meters of water reach residents daily—far below pre-crisis levels, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Why the Shortage Isn’t Over
OCHA reports ‘significant water losses’ in hard-to-reach areas due to damaged infrastructure. Humanitarian groups are scrambling to fill the gap by boosting groundwater extraction and trucking in desalinated water from private plants. 💦
Hygiene Kits & Emergency Aid
Since late January 2026, over 100,000 water containers, 700,000+ soap bars, and 25,000 hygiene kits have been distributed. Teams also installed 400+ emergency latrines to prevent disease outbreaks. 🧼🚚
‘The situation remains critical,’ OCHA emphasized, urging sustained international support. With Gaza’s population of over 2 million, current supplies cover just a fraction of daily needs.
