Kinshasa Activists Fight to Save Historic Baobab Tree 🌳✊

Environmental activists in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), are racing to protect a 100-year-old Baobab tree in the city center—a living symbol of the nation’s ecological and cultural heritage. The tree, located in the bustling Gombe suburb, faced demolition for a new building until public pressure forced a pause in construction.

🌍 Jean Mangalibi, a local gardener and activist, spearheaded the campaign, rallying supporters under the banner of the ‘About the Baobab’ platform. "This tree is where leaders once gathered to shape Congo’s future. We’re fighting to keep that legacy alive," he told crowds, emphasizing the tree’s role in Kinshasa’s history.

Activists allege the land was illegally sold by a state-owned transport company to a private developer. While the DRC government hasn’t publicly addressed the claims, the project is currently on hold, giving hope to locals who view the Baobab as a "green monument" to Congo’s past as a leader in sustainable practices.

With most urban Baobabs now on Kinshasa’s outskirts, this lone survivor in Gombe has become a rallying point for environmentalists and history buffs alike. Will it stand tall in 2026? The battle continues. 💪
