Spain Blocks US Use of Bases for Iran Strikes, Stresses UN Compliance 🌍✈️

Spain has drawn a red line in its alliance with the US, refusing to let American forces use its military bases to launch attacks on Iran. Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares declared this week that bases like Rota and Morón – jointly operated but under Spanish sovereignty – won’t be weaponized for “unjustified” military interventions. 🚫⚔️

The move comes after 15 US aircraft departed Spanish bases following weekend strikes by the US and Israel against Iran. FlightRadar24 data shows most landed at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base, with tankers like the KC-135 Stratotanker leading the exodus. 📡✈️

While the UK reversed course to allow base access for “collective self-defense,” Spain’s Socialist PM Pedro Sánchez doubled down, calling the strikes a “dangerous breach of international law”. The stance risks further straining Madrid-Washington ties, analysts say.

“Spanish bases will only be used for what’s agreed with the US and aligned with the UN Charter,” Albares told Telecinco, emphasizing Spain’s commitment to diplomatic over military solutions. 🌐🤝

Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed the departing aircraft were permanently stationed in Spain, highlighting the strategic value of these bases. But as global tensions flare, Spain’s refusal signals a growing rift among Western allies on how to navigate 2026’s geopolitical minefield. 💥🌍
