US Judge Halts Plan to End Protections for Somali Immigrants 🇸🇴⚖️

A federal judge in Massachusetts has temporarily blocked the termination of humanitarian protections for approximately 1,100 Somali immigrants in the US, delivering a lifeline to families facing potential deportation. The ruling comes just days before the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program was set to expire on March 17.

Judge Allison D. Burroughs emphasized the "myriad of grave risks" Somalis could face if deported, including violence in their home country and family separation. The court’s administrative stay keeps TPS active for current holders and applicants while legal challenges proceed. 🛡️

The Department of Homeland Security argued Somalia’s conditions have improved, stating: "Temporary means temporary." But advocacy groups like African Communities Together counter that the termination process was "procedurally flawed" and discriminatory.

This case joins a broader national debate as the US Supreme Court weighs similar TPS battles affecting immigrants from Haiti and Syria. For now, Somali families can breathe easier – but the legal fight is far from over. 💼⚔️
