100,000 Flee South Sudan Violence to Ethiopia: UNICEF Sounds Alarm 🚨

Over 100,000 people have fled South Sudan’s escalating conflict into Ethiopia this month, according to UNICEF, as government forces ordered evacuations in the opposition-held town of Akobo. The March 6 military directive triggered a mass exodus, leaving healthcare systems in collapse and children at risk of malnutrition. 🌍

The Human Cost of Conflict

Akobo, a strategic town in Jonglei State, became a ghost town after the evacuation order. UNICEF reports that the local hospital has been looted and abandoned, while 28 health facilities across Jonglei have been destroyed or closed this year amid a cholera outbreak. “Violence is creating a devastating situation for children,” the agency warned.

A Nation in Peril

South Sudan—which gained independence in 2011—remains trapped in cycles of violence and poverty. Despite army claims of controlling Akobo, communication blackouts make verifying conditions nearly impossible. Displaced families now face dire shortages of food and medicine, with malnutrition rates among children described as “worryingly high.”

As the crisis deepens, aid groups urge international attention before the situation spirals further. 💔
