Kenya’s Youth Tackle Mental Health Through Books & Debates 📚💬

In 2026, Kenya’s youth are rewriting the script on mental health—one book and one debate at a time. Soma Nawe 254, a grassroots organization championing social change, launched its flagship education and mentorship program this year, targeting boys’ mental wellbeing in schools.

At St Benedict High School in Budalangi, students recently engaged in a fiery debate: “Is physical health more important than mental health?” The winning team argued that mental health shapes how we think, feel, and navigate life’s challenges—a perspective that resonated deeply in a region where stigma often silences these conversations.

“These debates aren’t just academic exercises,” says a program coordinator. “They’re sparking real dialogue about anxiety, self-worth, and societal pressures.” The initiative pairs book drives with mentorship sessions, creating safe spaces for teens to explore topics rarely discussed at home or in traditional classrooms.

With mental health issues rising globally among Gen Z, Kenya’s youth-led approach offers a blueprint for combining education with empowerment. As one student put it: “Now we know it’s okay to not be okay—and that’s half the battle.” 🌱💪
