In a rare diplomatic gesture, Kim Yo Jong of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has described Republic of Korea (ROK) President Lee Jae Myung's recent apology over a drone incursion as "a wise course of action," state media reported Tuesday. The unexpected praise comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
A Rare Moment of Diplomacy
Kim, a senior official in the Workers' Party of Korea, responded hours after President Lee expressed personal regret during a cabinet meeting on April 7, 2026. The ROK leader called the unauthorized drone flight "irresponsible and reckless" while emphasizing it didn't reflect government intent.
"This shows a broad-minded attitude worthy of a leader," Kim stated through the Korean Central News Agency, while simultaneously warning Seoul against future "reckless provocations."
Tensions and Warnings
The DPRK official issued a stark reminder: "Any repeat incidents threatening our sovereignty will lead to unbearable consequences." This comes after ROK's Unification Minister Chung Dong-young had already formally apologized for similar drone incidents in February 2026.
Analysts suggest this exchange could signal cautious openness for dialogue, though both sides remain firmly positioned. The incident marks the first direct response from Pyongyang to Seoul's leadership since the drone controversy began.
