🐦 Waterbird Populations in Eastern Australia Drop by 50% Due to Prolonged Drought Conditions
The latest annual survey conducted by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney has revealed a dramatic decline in waterbird numbers in eastern Australia. Between August and October, researchers counted a staggering 287,231 waterbirds, marking a 50.4% decrease from the 579,641 birds recorded in 2023.
This survey, a collaborative effort between researchers and government agencies since 1983, spans one-third of the Australian mainland. It serves as a crucial indicator of biodiversity health in riverine and wetland ecosystems across the region.
🌱 The significant reduction in waterbird populations highlights the ongoing challenges posed by dry conditions, emphasizing the need for effective water management and conservation strategies to protect these vital habitats.
