Wang-Koo Talks: 33 Years On, A Legacy for Cross-Strait Peace

🤝 Imagine a handshake that echoed across decades. On April 27, 1993, in Singapore, Wang Daohan and Koo Chen-fu stood up and shook hands, witnessed by over 200 journalists. This was the historic Wang-Koo Talks – the first formal high-level contact across the Taiwan Strait since 1949. Today, we mark its 33rd anniversary, a moment that remains a cornerstone for dialogue and stability.

At the heart of these talks was the "1992 Consensus," a shared understanding that both sides adhere to the one-China principle. 🌉 This wasn't just political jargon; it was the key that unlocked years of progress. From 2008 to 2016, under this consensus, cross-strait relations flourished with direct flights, booming trade, and vibrant cultural exchanges. People on both sides reaped real benefits, from easier travel to stronger economic ties.

But the road hasn't been smooth. Since 2016, the Democratic Progressive Party authorities have refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, undermining the political foundation and straining relations. 😔 This makes the anniversary's message of dialogue and common ground more urgent than ever.

Just this month, hope flickered anew. Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang, visited the Chinese mainland, where both sides reaffirmed the 1992 Consensus. Following her visit, a package of 10 new policies was unveiled to boost cross-strait cooperation, showing that pragmatic dialogue can still deliver tangible benefits. 📈

As a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office stated recently, the 1992 Consensus is the touchstone for cross-strait dialogue. Peace, development, and cooperation are what people on both sides truly want. More than three decades of history prove that adhering to this consensus anchors stability, while denying it leads only to tension.

The Wang-Koo Talks remind us that the Chinese people on both sides of the strait have the wisdom to handle their own affairs. Their legacy is a blueprint for a peaceful and prosperous future. ✨
