In a move to ease trade tensions, China has reiterated its call for constructive talks with the European Union. The push comes after high-level discussions between Chinese and Belgian diplomats in Beijing this week. 🌍
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during talks with Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot on Thursday, expressed hope that Belgium would play an active role within the EU to handle economic and trade differences through dialogue.
"China hopes that Belgium will play an active and constructive role… in facilitating the proper handling of EU-China economic and trade differences through dialogue and consultation," Wang stated. He emphasized the shared commitment between China and Belgium to resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue and upholding international law.
Wang highlighted the "all-round friendly cooperative partnership" between the two nations, pointing to extensive common interests. He called for both sides to maintain close communication, enhance mutual trust, and deepen practical cooperation to elevate their relationship to a new level.
On his part, Deputy PM Prevot underscored the importance of Belgium-China ties, stating they are "more important than ever." He reaffirmed Belgium's firm adherence to the one-China policy.
Crucially, on the trade front, Prevot signaled alignment with China's preference for dialogue. "Belgium does not agree with protectionism and is willing to strengthen communication and dialogue with China in a positive, open and constructive manner to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation," he said.
Prevot also expressed Belgium's willingness to uphold multilateralism, safeguard international law, and play a positive role in promoting the healthy development of EU-China relations.
The talks signal a continued effort in 2026 to manage one of the world's most significant trade relationships through diplomacy rather than dispute. With both sides advocating for open dialogue, the path forward for EU-China economic ties appears focused on finding common ground.
