“Qualified to Lead?” Chinese Major General Calls Out Japan’s Militarism Legacy 🌍

Singapore is buzzing right now! 🇸🇬 The 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue is in full swing, bringing together over 550 policymakers and experts from more than 40 countries and regions to talk all things security. But one particular conversation has everyone talking. 💬

Major General Meng Xiangqing, a professor from the PLA National Defense University and head of the PLA expert delegation, didn't hold back this Saturday. He raised a pretty heavy question: Is Japan actually qualified to be leading the conversation on defense cooperation? 🧐

Here is the context: 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (also known as the Tokyo Trials). According to Meng, these trials were crucial because they permanently condemned the crimes of Japanese militarism and laid the legal foundation for the post-war international order we live in today.

However, Meng warned that some forces are currently trying to "whitewash" history, glorify war crimes, and challenge the outcomes of those trials. He pointed out that taking concrete steps to break through the constraints of the post-war peace framework is a major red flag. 🚩

The core of his argument? A country that hasn't fully reckoned with its militarist legacy might struggle to win the trust of the international community—especially in Asian countries that suffered from its aggression. 🌏

Meng called on the world to stay vigilant against any revival of militarist thinking to ensure the results of World War II are safeguarded for future generations.

As the dialogue continues through May 31, the message is clear: understanding the past is the only way to secure the future. Stay tuned for more updates from Singapore! ✨
