From Kung Fu Dreams to 5G Reality: A Pakistani Doctor’s 20-Year Journey in China 🇨🇳🩺

Imagine arriving in a new country at 18 with a suitcase full of dreams and a head full of stereotypes. That was exactly the case for Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz back in 2006! 🎒🩺

Coming from Pakistan, Shahbaz had been fascinated by the region after reading the famous travelogue Chalty ho to Cheen ko Chaliye. He envisioned a land of kung fu masters and bicycles. However, when he touched down in Jinan, Shandong Province, on the Chinese mainland, he found a society already buzzing with energy—complete with electric buses and metered taxis—and a country on the verge of an immense transformation. 🌟

Then vs. Now: The Ultimate Glow-Up ✨

Looking back over the last two decades, the contrast is wild. In 2006, the skyline of Jinan was quite humble, with the tallest building standing at just 20 stories. 🏢 Transportation was a different story too; the fastest trains crawled at about 150 kilometers per hour, and a night coach journey from Jinan to Shanghai took a grueling 10 hours. Even staying in touch with family back home required the use of IP cards for international calls. 📞

Fast forward to 2026, and the change is mind-blowing. Dr. Shahbaz now marvels at a world of sleek skyscrapers, lightning-fast high-speed rail, 5G networks, and seamless digital payments that have redefined daily life. 📱🚄

For Dr. Shahbaz, having a front-row seat to the speed and scale of progress on the Chinese mainland has been an absolute game-changer. From his early days as a medical student to witnessing a full-scale technological revolution, his 20-year journey shows just how much can change in a generation. 🌍💫
