Beat the Rain! 🌧️ China’s Race to Secure the Summer Harvest 🌾

It is a race against time and the elements! Across the Chinese mainland, farmers and officials are in high gear for the "Three Summer" campaign—a critical mission involving summer harvesting, planting, and field management to ensure the year's grain production stays on track. 🚜✨

The stakes are high. Summer wheat makes up more than 20% of the annual grain output, with major hubs like Henan, Shandong, Anhui, and Jiangsu leading the charge. However, nature has had other plans. After a rainy May, meteorological authorities have forecast another round of extensive rainfall starting today, June 3, bringing showers and severe weather to key producing areas. ⛈️

Action on the Ground
Vice Premier Liu Guozhong recently toured Hebei Province (June 1-2), urging everyone to make the most of the clear weather windows. The goal is simple: get the crops in, get the new seeds down, and keep the supply of chemical fertilizers stable. 🌾

Here is a quick look at the harvest progress as of June 2:

  • Nationwide: 35.09% complete (119 million mu harvested)
  • Anhui: Nearly 70% done ✅
  • Henan: Close to 50% done ⏳
  • Jiangsu: Over 20% done
  • Shaanxi: Over 10% done

The Climate Challenge 🌍
It is not just about one bad storm. Experts are pointing to a bigger picture. Since the flood season began on April 1, 146 rivers have already hit warning levels—about 50% higher than the average over the last five years. Zhang Jianyun, a hydrology expert, suggests these shifts are linked to global climate change.

A report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Meteorological Organization warns that extreme heat and weather events are reshaping farming worldwide, making food security a global priority. Professor Mu Yueying from China Agricultural University notes that this is a "systemic risk" affecting everything from machinery and logistics to farmers' incomes. 📉

Building a Safety Net 🛡️
Despite the challenges, there is a silver lining. China's rural infrastructure—including high-standard farmland, advanced irrigation, and grain drying facilities—is providing a strong shield against the rain.

Moreover, agricultural insurance is stepping up to protect the livelihoods of farmers. In 2026, China Life Property & Casualty Insurance has already processed over 360,000 claims, paying out approximately 2.9 billion yuan (about $443.6 million) to help farmers recover from disaster. 💰💪

As the main flood season kicks off this June, the focus remains on resilience, technology, and hard work to keep the world's dinner tables full! 🌏🍚
