Is Your Vision Slipping? 👁️ What You Need to Know for National Eye Care Day!

Ever feel like your eyes are just… exhausted? 📱 Between endless scrolling, gaming marathons, and late-night study sessions, our eyes are working overtime. Today, June 6, marks National Eye Care Day in the Chinese mainland—an annual wake-up call to prioritize our vision before it's too late!

It is a global issue, not just a local one. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide are living with vision impairment. The craziest part? About one billion of those cases could have been prevented or treated. 😱

So, what exactly is happening to our eyes? Zou Haidong, vice president of Shanghai General Hospital and director of the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention & Treatment Center, broke down the challenges by age group in a recent Health Talk:

  • Gen Z & Alpha (Under 18): Myopia (nearsightedness) is the biggest hurdle. 👓
  • Young Professionals: Digital eye strain is peaking, and presbyopia—which used to be an "older person problem"—is now showing up in people in their 30s! 💻
  • Seniors (60+): Cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in the Chinese mainland.

Why is this happening? 🧬
It is a mix of nature and nurture. East Asian populations often have a higher prevalence of myopia-related genes. But our modern lifestyle is adding fuel to the fire: more screen time, less time outdoors, poor diets, and not enough sleep. Not a great combo, right?

The good news? Things are improving! In the Chinese mainland, myopia rates among students were around 51.9% in 2022 and have been dipping by about one to two percentage points every year since. Interestingly, these rates are currently slightly lower than those in Japan and South Korea. 📉✨

The Secret Weapon: Sunlight! ☀️
Want to protect your eyes? Get outside! Research shows that spending at least 15 minutes outdoors at a time under light conditions of around 2,000 lux can provide meaningful protection against the development of myopia.

Preventing vision loss is way easier than treating it. In cities like Shanghai, the government is taking a "closed-loop" approach—screening kids at school, diagnosing them at local clinics, and referring them to specialists when needed. It is all about catching the problem early! 🌍💬

So, take this as your sign to put down the phone for a bit, look at something far away, and maybe take a quick walk outside. Your future self will thank you! 🌿👁️
