Former Belgian Ambassador Plants Roots in China 🌳❤️

Patrick Nijs, who served as Belgium’s Ambassador to China from 2009 to 2013, made an unconventional choice after his diplomatic career: he traded embassy halls for the lush forests of Yunnan. The former envoy, deeply captivated by China’s culture and landscapes, retired early to settle permanently in the country.

Nijs and his Yunnan-born wife built a home nestled in the mountains, embracing a life intertwined with nature. Post-retirement, the couple planted 450 trees 🌲 as part of local ecological efforts, blending sustainability with personal passion. The ambassador’s emotional connection to China shines through his words: \"My life is reaching the end, and I know it’ll end in China like fallen leaves return to their roots.\"

Their story highlights cross-cultural bonds and environmental stewardship, resonating with travelers, eco-enthusiasts, and anyone captivated by unconventional life journeys. From mountain hikes to tea ceremonies, Nijs’ retirement embodies a modern love letter to China’s natural beauty and cultural depth.
