🎶 Dong People’s ‘San Yue San’ Festival Bridges Past & Present in Guizhou

In the misty river valleys of Zhenyuan County, southwest China’s Guizhou Province, the air literally hums with history. This week, the Dong ethnic group recently celebrated their annual San Yue San (March 3rd) festival – a vibrant mix of folk songs, courtship rituals, and community bonding that’s been alive for over 1,000 years. 🎤🌿

Imagine: instead of sliding into DMs, young Dong people express affection through improvised duets. Riverside pavilions and ancient streets become stages where melodies replace small talk. ‘We sing to find love, to share joy, and to honor our ancestors,’ local singer Liang Meirong told CGTN during the festivities.

While smartphones 📱 haven’t replaced face-to-face harmonies, the 2026 celebrations saw a twist – livestreams brought global audiences into the action. ‘My cousins in Malaysia watched me sing!’ laughed 22-year-old participant Wu Yang. For diaspora communities, it’s a cultural lifeline; for travelers, it’s now a bucket-list experience.

As night fell, bonfires lit up gatherings where elders taught traditional ‘dagge’ ballads to Gen-Z teens. Because here, every note is a thread connecting China’s rich past to its dynamic present. 🪕✨
