China Eyes Lunar Greenhouses for Moon Missions 🌱🌕

Chinese engineers are aiming to grow more than just moon rocks 🌑—they’re planning to build a lunar surface greenhouse to help future robots and rovers survive the moon’s brutal nights, announced senior space engineer Wang Qiong this week. Temperatures during the 14-day lunar night can plunge to -200°C ❄️, making survival a major challenge for equipment.

Wang, part of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), revealed that the project will use cutting-edge lunar construction tech to create a protective environment. 🌙 "As we move toward long-term lunar stays, this greenhouse could be a game-changer," he said during a press conference in Beijing.

The announcement comes after China’s groundbreaking Chang’e-6 mission in 2024, which brought back nearly 2 kilograms of samples from the moon’s far side—a first in human history. 🔬 Analysis of these samples has already led to major breakthroughs, including new insights into the moon’s ancient history.

International collaboration is also blooming: the Chang’e-6 mission carried payloads from France, Italy, the European Space Agency, and Pakistan’s CubeSat, all of which "exceeded expectations," Wang noted. 🤝

Could fresh veggies 🌿 on the moon be next? While the focus is on tech survival for now, this research plants the seeds for humanity’s future in deep space.
