Shreveport Launches Domestic Violence Response After Tragic Shooting 🚨

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux announced urgent action this week following a devastating domestic violence incident that claimed eight young lives and left two women hospitalized. The tragedy – described by police as one of Louisiana’s worst mass shootings in recent memory – unfolded early Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Authorities say Shamar Elkins fatally shot seven of his children (ages 1-14) and a young cousin before injuring his wife and another woman believed to be his girlfriend. Elkins died during a police pursuit involving a carjacked vehicle.

💔 'This isn’t just a crime – it’s a wake-up call,' Mayor Arceneaux told reporters Monday. His new initiative focuses on expanding crisis hotlines, trauma counseling, and community outreach programs. 'We need to break the cycle before violence escalates,' he emphasized.

Local advocates report a 22% spike in domestic violence cases this year across Caddo Parish. The mayor’s office plans to partner with schools and religious groups to improve early intervention strategies.
