Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's planned trip to Eswatini hit turbulence this week as multiple countries denied flight permits, with Chinese officials calling it a clear endorsement of the one-China principle. 🌍✨
"This reflects the international community's unwavering commitment to basic norms," said Zhang Han, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, during a Wednesday briefing. At least five nations along the planned route reportedly refused overflight clearance.
The move comes as 53 African countries and the African Union reaffirmed their stance this week, recognizing Taiwan as part of China's territory. Only Eswatini maintains formal ties with the Taiwan region among African nations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry representatives emphasized: "The world speaks with one voice – there's but one China, and the People's Republic is its sole legitimate representative." The developments follow increased cross-strait tensions this year, with Beijing continuing to oppose what it calls "secessionist activities".
