But the tragedy didn't stop there. Just a few days later, two Chadian generals were reportedly killed in another ambush while patrolling the islands of Lake Chad. While local media suggest there are even more casualties among the soldiers, official numbers are still being finalized.
In response to these losses, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has declared three days of national mourning across the country. During this time, flags are flying at half-mast, and all public celebrations have been put on hold.
