Fuel Prices Spike in Kenya: Protests Paralyze Nairobi ⛽️🚫

Things are heating up in Kenya, and we aren't talking about the weather. 🇰🇪 Massive protests erupted across the country this Monday, leaving commuters stranded and turning the streets of Nairobi into a parking lot. The cause? A brutal surge in fuel prices that has pushed many drivers to their breaking point.

The chaos started after the Transport Sector Alliance called for a total shutdown, urging member vehicles to stop operating from midnight. By the time the sun came up, major roads leading into the capital were barricaded with burning tires and debris, creating severe traffic jams that paralyzed the city's pulse. 🚗💥

Why is this happening? It all comes down to the numbers. Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority recently hiked retail fuel prices by up to 23.5%. This follows another massive jump of 24.2% just last month. The government has pointed to global supply pressures and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East as the primary drivers of these skyrocketing costs. 🌍📈

For the people on the ground, these aren't just percentages—they're life-altering costs. Richard Ndoko, chairperson of the Ngong Road Online Drivers, shared the struggle: "I used to spend at least Ksh 2,000 (approximately $15.43) a day on fuel, but now I spend around Ksh 3,500 (approximately $27). That leaves us with almost nothing at the end of the day," he explained, adding that repaying car loans has become an uphill battle. 💸

The situation has remained tense, with police deploying tear gas in several areas to clear the roads and disperse crowds. Despite the pressure, drivers have made it clear: the protests will continue until the government finds a way to address the crushing cost of fuel. 📢

Stay tuned as we keep an eye on how this unfolds and what it means for the region's economy. ✨
