Ghanaians Heading Home: Repatriation from South Africa Begins 🇬🇭✈️

Things have been getting tense in South Africa, and Ghana is taking action to keep its people safe. 🌍 Today, Wednesday, May 27, the first wave of Ghanaian nationals began their journey back home, departing from OR Tambo International Airport on flights heading straight to Accra.

Why is this happening? Recent anti-immigrant protests have sparked serious safety concerns, leading to a voluntary repatriation program coordinated between the two governments. Around 300 people—including women and children—have signed up to head back to the Gold Coast. 🇬🇭

This move comes after President John Mahama gave the green light earlier this month. The process started with an advisory from the foreign ministry, prompting affected Ghanaians to register with the High Commission in Pretoria to ensure they could get home safely.

However, the situation has a complicated side. A South African immigration official mentioned to broadcaster eNCA that many of those leaving were actually in non-compliance with immigration laws. In fact, only 10 of the 300 passengers were reportedly legal residents in the country. 📑

Despite the paperwork drama, the main goal right now is safety and stability for those caught in the middle of the unrest. Stay tuned as we keep an eye on this developing story! ✨
