Tokyo’s Streets Go ‘No War’: Thousands Protest PM Takaichi’s Military Push 🚫🇯🇵

Tokyo just saw a massive wave of people demanding peace! 🌊 Around 10,000 people flooded the area in front of Japan's National Diet Building this past Friday evening for a powerful anti-war rally. The vibe? Intense, passionate, and focused on one goal: stopping what they call the "dangerous" policy moves of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government.

Under the banner "Don't Let War Happen," the crowd was a sea of signs. Banners like "No to Lethal Weapons Exports" and "Stop War Profiteering" were everywhere, while chants of "No War," "No Military Buildup," and "Protect Peace" echoed through the streets. 📢✨

For many, this isn't just about politics—it's personal. One protester, Matsuzawa, shared his worries about the future. With a child in elementary school, he feels Japan is sliding toward a militaristic path, pointing to the government's push for anti-espionage legislation and the effort to revise Article 9 of the Constitution. He noted that these moves feel eerily similar to the atmosphere in Japan before World War II. 😟

While the protests were heating up in Tokyo, the Takaichi administration has been busy ramping up security ties. Just last Thursday, PM Takaichi met with President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos of the Philippines. The two leaders locked in several defense agreements, including fast-tracking the export of destroyers to the Philippine Navy. 🚢

Not everyone is on board with this strategy. Another protester told Xinhua that exporting lethal weapons is a direct violation of the Constitution and warned that such moves could crank up tensions across the region. Instead, she's calling for diplomacy to be the real MVP in bringing peace to Asia. 🌏🤝

And it wasn't just Tokyo! According to Asahi Shimbun, the energy spread across the country, with coordinated protests happening at around 150 different locations throughout Japan on the same day. It's clear that a huge number of people are waking up and speaking out about the direction their country is heading. ✊🇯🇵
