Armenia’s High-Stakes Balance: Staying in EAEU While Eyeing the EU 🇦🇲✨

Ever felt like you're being pulled in two different directions? That's exactly the vibe in Armenia right now! 🌍 The country is currently navigating a tricky geopolitical balancing act between its long-standing ties with Russia and its dreams of joining the European Union (EU).

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently took to social media to clear the air. He announced that Armenia will continue to work within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)—the Russia-led trade bloc—"calmly and confidently." According to Pashinyan, the idea of having to choose one over the other is still mostly theoretical at this stage. 💬

But it's not all smooth sailing. Just a few days ago, on May 29, the presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan dropped a bombshell. They issued a joint statement calling for Armenia to hold a referendum to decide whether it wants to chase EU membership or stick with the EAEU. 🗳️

Pashinyan wasn't having it. He rejected the proposal, calling a referendum "illogical and unjustified" right now, since Armenia hasn't even formally applied for EU membership or reached candidate status yet. He's trying to keep things chill, describing the current transformation of bilateral ties with Russia as a positive process. 🤝

However, Moscow isn't exactly thrilled. On May 30, Russia's Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations. The reason? Russia believes Armenia is aligning too closely with the EU, which they say is undermining the EAEU's cooperation. 😬

This tension comes after a major move last year; on April 4, 2025, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a law to officially kickstart the process of joining the EU. 🇪🇺

So, can Armenia keep both sides happy, or is a clash inevitable? It's a classic case of "having your cake and eating it too," but in the world of international diplomacy, the stakes are way higher than just dessert! 🍿
