Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman Elected President of 81st UN General Assembly! 🇺🇳✨

Big news from the world stage! 🌍 Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has officially been elected as the president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). In a tight race on Tuesday, Rahman secured 99 votes from 190 member states, edging out Cyprus's Andreas S. Kakouris, who received 91 votes.

Rahman, who stepped into his role as Bangladesh's foreign minister back in February 2026, is set to take the lead when the session kicks off this September. He will be steering the ship for a one-year term, and he is already talking about the big challenges ahead. 🚀

During his acceptance speech, Rahman kept it humble but real. He acknowledged that the UN is currently facing some serious tests—from ongoing conflicts and wars causing "untold sufferings" to financial stress and a dip in public trust. But he is not letting that stop him! 💪

To get things back on track, Rahman has outlined a "six-pillar" game plan. Here is what he is focusing on:

  • 🕊️ Peace and Security
  • 📅 The 2030 Agenda
  • 🌡️ Climate Change
  • ⚖️ Human Rights
  • 🤖 Emerging Tech & AI
  • 🛠️ UN Reform

With a diplomatic career starting way back in 1979 and over 25 years of experience within the UN Secretariat (including time in Geneva and New York), Rahman definitely has the experience to lead. From being a special adviser to authoring flagship UN publications, he is a seasoned pro ready to tackle the world's toughest problems. 📚💼

Stay tuned as we follow how Rahman's leadership shapes the global conversation starting this September! 💬✨
