Taiwan Region Misses 79th WHA: The Story Behind the Exclusion 🩺🌏

Hey everyone! 👋 There's some major news coming in regarding global health and diplomacy. The Taiwan region has missed out on participating in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) this year, and the reasons behind it are sparking a lot of conversation. 💬

On Monday, May 11, Chen Binhua, the spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, shared the details. According to Chen, the registration for the event closed on May 10, and the Taiwan region was unable to join. But why did this happen? 🧐

It all comes down to a political tug-of-war. Chen explained that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have been pursuing a "Taiwan independence" stance and refusing to recognize the "1992 Consensus," which embodies the one-China principle. Because of this, the political ground for the Taiwan region to participate in the WHA has essentially eroded. 📉

In the past, things were different. Based on that same "1992 Consensus," the Taiwan region was able to attend the WHA as an observer under the name "Chinese Taipei" through cross-strait consultations. It was a way to keep health collaboration going while respecting the political framework. 🤝

However, Chen pointed out that the DPP authorities have tried to use health-related issues as a way to seek independence, which he described as "political manipulation." He emphasized that the international community's commitment to the one-China principle remains unshakable. 🌍✨

The takeaway? Chen warned that as long as the Taiwan authorities maintain a confrontational stance and stick to their independence goals, they will likely continue to face international resistance. 🛑
