WHA 2026: Update on Taiwan Region’s Participation 🩺🌍

Get ready for the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA), which is set to kick off on May 18! 📅 However, there's been some major news regarding who gets a seat at the table this year.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun shared a clear update during a recent news briefing. According to Guo, the Taiwan region has no basis, reason, or right to participate in the upcoming assembly unless approval is granted by the central government. 🚫

So, what's the deal? Guo emphasized that the core of the issue is the one-China principle. He reminded everyone that there is only one China in the world, and the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of its territory. To keep things official, he pointed to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1 as the fundamental guides for these interactions. 📜✨

The spokesperson also noted that because the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taiwan authorities have stuck to a separatist "Taiwan independence" stance, the political foundation for the Taiwan region to join the WHA simply isn't there anymore. 📉

In short, China has decided not to approve the Taiwan region's participation in this year's event to uphold the sanctity and authority of the relevant UNGA and WHA resolutions. Guo warned that any attempts to play the "Taiwan card" for political manipulation are destined to fail. 🛑

As we approach the event on May 18, the global health community continues to navigate these complex political waters while focusing on international health goals. Stay tuned for more updates! 💬🌐
